We are delighted to have been selected to participate in the Creative Schools Initiative. This initiative supports schools to put the arts and creativity at the heart of children’s and young people’s lives. It provides opportunities for children and young people to build their artistic and creative skills; to communicate, collaborate, stimulate their imaginations, be inventive, and to harness their curiosity. It empowers children to develop, implement and evaluate arts and creative activity throughout their schools/centres and stimulate additional ways of working that reinforce the impact of creativity on children and young people’s learning, development and well-being.
As part of the initiative, we explored the meaning of creativity with our pupils, staff and parents. We established a Creative Schools committee from pupils in the school. We worked in consultation with our Creative Associate who was assigned to us by the Arts Council. Our committee established our strengths and areas for improvement in the area of creativity. Following from this, we identified one clear focus for our Creative Schools plan. Our objective is: Developing a Creative Space in the school. We have already selected an outdoor space at the back of the school. This will be a place where children can take a break from the hustle and bustle of the classroom and spend some time developing their creativity, be that writing a poem, drawing a picture, playing the tin whistle, or simply enjoying the buzzing bees and chirping birds!
