You are very welcome to the website of our fantastic school, here in the heart of West Cork. As principal of the school, it is my pleasure to give you a snapshot of what school life is like in Drimoleague N.S. I hope that this site provides you with an idea of who we are and what we value.
Drimoleague N.S. is a senior national school catering for 3rd to 6th class. We are a vibrant school community with a committed staff, diligent pupils and highly supportive parents. Central and core to everything we do in the school is guiding and supporting each child in realising their own potential. Every child is different, every child’s needs are distinct and every child’s talents are unique. We highly value creating the opportunities for each girl and boy to shine in one way or another during their time with us. As well as the very important work that takes place day-to-day in the classroom, we carefully select a range of initiatives that appeal to the wide array of talents in our school; in the fields of arts and creativity, leadership and entrepreneurship, languages, science and technology, sport, music, social and environmental issues to name but a few.
Our daily teaching methods reflect the fact that not all children learn the same way, just as Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences suggests. We have a wide range of resources and a highly skilled staff that support the unique and individual learning needs of each child. Being a small rural school allows us to know each child for who they are and where they need to go in their learning. We aim to bring out the best in our pupils in order for them to grow into happy, responsible and well-rounded individuals.
While we may be a small school in a small village, we realize that our impact can be huge. Teaching children about the wider world is a core element in our teaching, enabling our pupils to discover the ‘bigger picture’ within the confines of the four walls of the classroom. However, we also maximise the learning potential of our locality. Our local heritage and history are a source not only of learning about the past, but the present and future also.
We have high standards for each boy and girl that passes through our doors, ensuring that respect for oneself and for others remains a basic principle of daily school life.
I hope that you will enjoy reading about and exploring the many facets of Drimoleague Senior School through exploring our website.
Is mise le meas,
Patrick Collins, Principal
