National Children’s Choir 2023

The hills of Drimoleague were alive with the sound of music on Thursday 11th May with the voices of close to 300 pupils from primary schools in West Cork performing as part of the

National Children’s Choir, West Cork, here in Drimoleague.  This is the fourth time that the Drimoleague community hosted this celebration of song in the local church, the last time being in 2019.

Children from eight West Cork primary schools performed a selection of songs from classical to popular including Take a Chance, Cantar, With or Without You, Oh Shenandoah, Cúnnla, Mary Had a Little Blues, Laudate Dominum to name but a few. The children were accompanied by a twenty-four piece orchestra, led and organised by Carol Daly, principal of the Cork School of Music and were conducted by Anne Crowley, teacher at St. Patrick’s N.S. in Skibbereen.

Drimoleague N.S were accompanied by Scoil an Chroí Ró Naofa Castletownbere, Lisheen N.S., Goleen, N.S, St. Patrick’s Boys’ N.S Skibbereen, St. Joseph’s Girls’ N.S. Skibbereen, Unionhall N.S. and Our Lady of Mercy N.S. Bantry. We are very proud to have hosted this fantastic event and owe a huge amount of gratitude to the parents and the wider community who helped us in the organisation of the concert.

Creative Schools

Our Creative Space is Nearly There!

We were delighted to have had the opportunity to develop a creative space in the school as part of the Creative Schools’ Initiative. This wonderful idea came from, and was developed by our pupils, led by the school’s Creative Committee. A plan was devised and we collaborated with a garden artist to bring it to fruition.

Our Creative Space will be a place where we can go to ‘switch off’, disconnect and give ourselves time to be creative – be that through art, words or music, or simply to reconnect with nature. We will use this place for some learning also.

The plants for our Creative Space have been specially selected to include medicinal and healing plants ensuring that our space is truly a haven for mind and body!

Central to our Creative Space is a wonderful sculpture designed and built by children in the school. This sculpture tells the story of our local heritage, and what it means to be part of our community and what we can become, linking past, present and future. Each child decorated a stone which embellished our sculpture.

There has been lots of digging, planting, thinking and creating and we are nearly there! We hope to install some seating and benching to complete our Creative Space early in the new school year. Watch this space!

A leaflet with labels and ideas for gifts was sent home. An online donation of €4 must be made to cover the cost of delivery.

This is a great way of giving to those less well off than us and we encourage you to get involved. See here for more info.

Shoeboxes must be brought into school by Friday November 5th.
